Get Yourself Active Local: Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin

Empowering Disabled people and those with long-term health conditions to move more, live well, and shape the future of physical activity

The Get Yourself Active Local project in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin is a collaborative initiative led by Disability Rights UK and Energize STW. It aims to increase the number of Disabled people and those with long-term health conditions to be physically active in ways that suit them.

Despite growing evidence that movement supports wellbeing, Disabled people are twice as likely to be inactive compared to non-disabled people. This project is working to close that gap by embedding physical activity into everyday life, services, and decision-making across the region.

What We’re Doing

Through a joined-up, holistic approach, we’re bringing together key partners—from people with lived experience and councils, to health and social care professionals, and local activity providers—to co-design, deliver and support sustainable opportunities to be active.

We’re focusing on three key areas:

  • Health and Social Care Workforce
Upskilling paid and unpaid carers to understand the importance of physical activity and feel confident supporting the people they care for to move more.
  • Moving Social Work
Creating training resources and strategies for current and future social workers to promote physical activity as part of everyday practice, helping reduce health inequalities and promote social justice.
  • Co-production
Embedding co-production in the physical activity sector by working directly with people with lived experience to ensure activities and environments are inclusive, accessible, and shaped by real needs.

Our Vision

A community where Disabled people and those with long-term health conditions are empowered to lead active lives on their own terms—and where health, care, and sport systems work together to support this goal.
