What is Fitness to Disabled People? Lizzi’s Story

As part of National Fitness Day, we have launched a blog series with members of Get Yourself Active’s Sounding Board. The Sounding Board are a group of Disabled people who meet every two months with the GYA team to discuss present barriers that Disabled people are facing in the sport and physical activity sector.

The aim of the group is to gain further insight into some of the issues  Disabled people are facing at a local level, which can often be overlooked by sports sector organisations that operate at a national scale. This includes barriers surrounding access to physical activity, such as benefits and transport.

We wanted to spotlight Disabled people’s experiences of activity and sport – very often, fitness can mean something different to us than it might to non-disabled people. We’re excited to share their stories and experiences in this series! Today we’re hearing from Lizzie, who speaks about her Paralympic success and how sport helped to give a focus after she acquired her visual impairment.

Fitness has given me a whole new purpose in life since acquiring my disability in 2017. It has allowed me to focus on what my body can achieve, instead of what it can’t. I very suddenly acquired my visual impairment 8 years ago and alongside this suffered from a lot of physical setbacks.

Fitness not only gave me a purpose to get back on my feet, it allowed me to meet new friends and force myself out of my comfort zone.

My love for sport was kick started with running and the desire to complete the London marathon. During this I found enjoyment in the gym and then transitioned into tandem cycling. Here my once unrealistic dreams turned into a reality, and I transformed myself from a previously unconfident vulnerable 19-year-old to a Paralympic and World Champion Para-Cyclist for Great Britain in 2024.

Working with Get Yourself Active/DR UK has opened up my horizons to just how many different disabilities there are and how the world of fitness can embrace every single one of them

I love partaking in regular sounding boards where people from all backgrounds are free to discuss and create change towards a more accessible fitness world.
