What is Fitness to Disabled People? Gavin’s Story

Hear Gavin’s story of wheelchair-based rugby and the world of Disabled sport.

I have always been into fitness. From team sports to individual sports and gym work I am there for it. How I go about it has changed over the years. I was born Disabled, with bone deformities in both legs. For me this meant not having any spring and having limited range of motion. I still played sports with everybody else but could never really keep up.

Nowadays fitness looks different from my younger years. Its predominantly wheelchair based or seated and I love it. I think the biggest thing it’s taught me is how to adapt.

As an example, I played rugby as a kid and loved it, but my legs were not made for it. I loved the physicality of it and worried about not having that as a wheelchair user – how wrong I was! Murderball anybody?

This shift has only really happened in the last few years, in part due to just not knowing I would qualify for disability sport – I always figured I’d be deemed not disabled enough but at the same time I was too disabled for non-disabled competition. Exploring this through Get Yourself Active has opened my world back up to sport and allows me to show my kids the true meaning of adaptability and drive to do the things you love.
